Inspiring Humans: Lauren Singer

On youtube and sites like Ted, I have found a number of really inspiring people that promote great messages. It is so easy to get caught up in all the awful things that happen, and you just have to look at the news to see yet another problem arise. I thought it would be nice to share a few of my favorite inspiring people with y’all and try to promote positive thinking in a new series I’m going to start on my blog.

I found out about Lauren Singer in a video on living zero waste on Refinery 21’s youtube channel and since then I have watched several other videos from her that are so inspiring. Singer lives a zero waste life and has shown the world that reducing trash is an attainable goal when we put our minds too it. She makes a lot of her products in order to not have to buy things in plastic, and she recycles and composts every scrap she produces. All the trash she has made these last few years fits in a mason jar. Mind blown? Mine was. Watching her videos really helped me become more aware of all the trash I produce and I’m making an effort to recycle everything I can and put food scraps in the green cart. I know this is small but I’m hoping to start small and work my way up. I might not go full on waste free but I can defiantly reduce my waste a good amount.

Singer’s website (http://www.trashisfortossers.com) shares information about her lifestyle and gives advice on going waste free. I decided to read up on landfills and recycling and what I found was rather shocking. It’s estimated that each American throws away 1,200 pounds of trash each year. Almost 30% of landfills are made up of paper and cardboard, both easily recyclable products, and another 15% is food waste that could be significantly brought down through composting or recycling in green yard carts. Singer has shown me that all of this is completely unnecessary and that if we stop and take a moment to look at our waste and make strides to recycle and compost more, we can seriously help our environment.

Check out her TED talk and tell me what you think!
